I sent an email to myself from a different email address (from yahoo) and when the email downloaded, the mystery emails appeared as well. Not just one, but two. It also happens when my son receives email from Google Alerts. The mystery emails dated 12/31/69 appear in my mailbox (the main mailbox). I had 2 blank emails come in with the 12/31/69 date, and I just found them to be hilarious.

This anomaly has happened throughout the various iOS upgrades from 3, 4, 5, or even 6. I can't say why you're getting the mail but the significance of the date 12/31/1969 is the Unix (Vax-Epoch) Timestamp and is explained here. The beginning of the "Vax-Epoch" to which all computer I've recently been getting an email message which appears to be dated 12/31/69, but has "no sender," "no subject," and "no content." The first couple of times I just deleted it, but now it pops back in almost simultaneously with the deletion, so that my mail icon chronically shows at least 1 unread message.
